Due to the coronation of King Charles III, there will be an extra bank holiday this year on Monday 8th May. What does this mean for your employees?
Many employees may have questions about their annual leave. Employees are entitled to at least 28 days of annual leave, which usually includes bank holidays. However, to know exactly what the employee is entitled to, you must check their contract of employment.
If your employee’s contract states that they are entitled to 20 days of holiday plus bank holidays (there are usually 8 per year), then they will have the right to take the extra bank holiday off as paid leave. However, if the contract specifically states that they are entitled to 20 days of holiday plus eight bank holidays, then you are not obligated to grant the extra day.
You do not need to close on the day of the coronation, so if you choose to remain open, you may wish to allow employees to watch the coronation ceremony at work. If you decide to show the coronation on the television, you will need to make sure that you have a television licence.
You could organise a showing of the ceremony at work in a common room, or allow employees to watch it from their desks. You could arrange for employees to take longer breaks or allow them to make up time spent watching the ceremony later. You could also play the proceedings through the radio.
