Many employees will sit and work at a desk for many hours at a time. Could this cause

health problems?

There are many health issues that can be traced back to extended sitting time, such as musculoskeletal issues (pain in the neck or back), cardiovascular disease, or even cancer and diabetes. A study on health, well-being and habits also found that employees that do at least 2.5 hours of exercise per week are less likely to experience negative physical or mental effects from work. What can you do to help?

You could consider the following initiatives for primarily desk workers:

  • Height adjustable desks (sit-to-stand) to allow staff to change their working positions regularly,

  • Allow employees to have regular breaks away from their desks,

  • Hold standing meetings,

  • Organising lunchtime walks,

  • Provide benefits that encourage employees to be active, such as gym memberships, subsidised exercise classes or a cycle-to-work scheme,

  • Encourage employees to take sick leave when they’re struggling with their health

  • Train managers to provide better support.
