A report by the TUC found that two in five black and minority ethnic (BAME) workers have experienced racism at work in the last five years- however only 19% of these workers reported the cases of racism to their employer. What can you do to help encourage a supportive working environment that allows employees to feel comfortable to speak out about racism?

First of all, it is important to ensure that your company culture is one that values openness and inclusivity. If being able to talk to their employer about any of their concerns is the norm for your workers, they are more likely to feel comfortable to approach you about any concerns they have regarding race within your workplace.

You also need to show your employees that racism is something that will never be tolerated within your workplace. Any racist behaviour should be handled through your disciplinary procedure. If you do not investigate racism claims and act when they are well-founded, then your employee is able to challenge this via employment tribunal.

Finally, it is essential that you have a Dignity at Work policy within your Employee Handbook which fully addresses how instances of racism will be tackled. Every employee should be aware of the contents of this policy, and your company's stance against racism.
