Marking International Women's Day on 8 March, the Government has published new guidance aimed at supporting women to succeed at work, covering two areas that affect millions of women at every stage of their careers: the gender pay gap and menopause in the workplace.
The guidance, which applies in England, Scotland and Wales, confirms that from April 2026 employers with 250 or more employees will be encouraged to produce and publish a voluntary action plan alongside their gender pay gap data, with this becoming mandatory from spring 2027 subject to secondary legislation.
Government Menopause Employment Ambassador Mariella Frostrup has urged every large employer to put suitable action plans in place, highlighting that menopause affects millions of women at the height of their careers. The Office for Equality and Opportunity has also noted that the recommended actions may benefit employees experiencing other conditions related to menstrual health, including endometriosis, fibroids and PCOS.
Minister for Women and Equalities Bridget Phillipson said the guidance is about empowering women at work and ensuring businesses benefit from women's talents, noting that too many women are still not paid fairly or find their health needs overlooked.
Even if your organisation falls below the 250 employee threshold, getting ahead of this now is good practice and demonstrates a genuine commitment to equality in your workplace.
