A survey by Acas has found that 36% of employers have seen an increase in employees working from home in the last year. The Acas Chief Executive, Susan Chews, has claimed that this increase is related to the rising cost of living.
She stated that "For some workers, the cost of commuting is eating into their budgets, while for others, going to their workplaces saves on home energy costs". This means that it would be ideal to communicate with your employees and allow them to work from home or in the office where possible, depending on which option would be the most helpful to them.
You should provide a home or hybrid working policy in your Employee Handbook that explains to employees the correct procedures for requesting home working, and how decisions on who will be permitted to work from home are made. These decisions must be fair and consistent among all of your employees.
If an employee requests to work from home and this is not feasible for business reasons, then you should discuss alternative working arrangements- such as flexible working hours.
